Para gliders and PPC about the same. The paraglide pilot appear pretty sophisticated. How do they get away with it?

I don't think they are the same. The main thing is positive G force but you don't do this stuff on an intro flight with a paying passenger or in a lesson. Crossing that line is irresponsible

Hey Toby, you should have seen what they did at the WorLd Air Games. I was talking to Nova who represented the USA and he can do a dozen back to back forward flips called an infinity roll. Then they collapse the chute and then it reopens called a dynamic stall. These guys are nuckin futs I asked him what happens if it doesn't re open or you accidentally fall into the chute. He said you just pull the reserve... Then I asked if his reserve ever failed after he told me he has pulled his reserve many times. YEP!!! Hit the ground at about 40 MPH with a wadded up reserve. Woke up 4 hours later with no injuries.

He did explain there is a big difference between a PPC a PPG and a paraglider and their capabilities. Bottom line i think they might be able to get away with the BIG G force numbers that any non aerobatic aircraft is not designed to withstand. But I don't really know. The hang gliders were looping like crazy also. All done over water which seemed to be a safety net some how.

The paraglider wing itself can withstand (and dish out in a collapse or maneuver) more G's than the human machine can handle. It is not uncommon for pilots to go unconscious in some of their maneuvers clinics over water- I had a couple friends in our local HG/PG club get hurt that way. I never liked the idea of your wing going floppy all of the sudden in some turbulence, especially if it happened on short final over some rocks / cactus- OTHER THAN THAT minor detail, they are pretty cool.

(Oh, and Larry alludes to the same problem I think about- if they have an unrecoverable collapse (because of turbulence say) of their main wing (basically a parachute) the plan (if they have sufficient altitude and consciousness) is to toss their backup parachute out into that same turbulence that deflated their primary parachute)

(This is a trike site right? ;)

It just amazes me how far these inflatable powered parachute and paraglider wings have gone and what is accepted where the trikers criticize anyone who does more than a 61 degree bank.

Paragliders look like big fun until they aren't.

    Hi Toby
who is critisizing people going 61 degree AOB in trikes? I have not seen that criticism lately.
I think when you have a passenger who is not a trike pilot and does not know what he is getting into, you have a responsibility to be conservative. When the passenger is a paying student it's even more important.

Aerobatics in trikes has too long been the taboo subject. I would not fly
a bag wing on a bet. But loops and aero in trikes blows HG aero out of the sky.
It is just another skill set to be learned with the right equipment. Think of the fun
you can have practicing pitch-rate climbs? (stick thermals?) Kind of like a whip-stall
only no stall, at the top of the climb you level off and fly away. With the right pitch
rate I can do a loop and trade < 30 mph of airspeed. I think an E-powered Aerobatic
Trike could start a whole new X-sport perfect for weekend sportscasts and really raise our public image. Imagine all the students signing up for lessons bringing in a
photo or ad of a trike looping and they all say "I wanna be that guy!". All 30yrs younger than the average trike student now. Or we could just keep pricing it out
of the average guys reach and continue to shrink our sport and the whole trike market.

Wow, Charlie, that is an amazing site! ( http://www.cometclones.com/mythology2011.htm ) It describes why I never trusted the PG wing. The PG's are pissed (maybe partially rightly so)- but he makes a good argument that the PG are just hiding from (or even literally deleting) the data and instead favoring the fa$t buck over life. The participants need accurate data and warning and (more important) improvements that truly save lives.

In regards to the above post (two above this one), I think you have responsibility ANYtime you are flying- your own death/injury (or that of those on the ground) and the sport's reputation suffers huge damage outside your own coffin.

Ted, I don't think that aerobatics in trikes has been a taboo subject. Most of us aren't interested in doing aerobatics in trikes, but I'm sure all of us, including the net nannies, would love to watch some decent trike aerobatics video. As you know there isn't a very wide selection of trike aerobatics for us to watch on youtube. Strap a gopro camera on your trike and show us how its done.

That is my plan Charlie if summer ever comes to Boise. I am upgrading a 103
trike for that very thing. Would not want anyone to confuse me with a real
(SP) trike pilot and see that I am fined for my solo recreational flying.

Ted you'll actually be flying, like Orville and Wilbur. Sport pilots are exercising weight-shift priveleges. Big difference!

    Derby,
I posted this because some of the new trike pilots appear pretty opinionated about exactly what other trike pilots should and should not be doing. The paraglides and hang gliders can do aerobatics and no one criticizes this. I was able to check out all the different types of flying from Paul’s videos and thought the paraglider guys were the coolest.

Hopefully you have seen my video at:

    Toby,
The HG aerobatics and PPG aerobatics are always seen done "alone". When you have a passenger, there is a line drawn that I consider sacred not to be passed.
