Why did he make no effort to flare? I don't think Cathy is over-impressed.

Very low for fly in that area, did nothing to do flair, and Cathy finally was speechless. Some pilots looking have accidents!!

Wow, he made it to a landing spot after flying so low stupidly over trees and then after doing the hard stuff, he didn't do the easy stuff right at the landing. Probably nerves. Good thing they were ok. Cathy was not ok. She was 2 inches shorter. That was about a 5 G landing. Doesn't seem that way to the occupants but it was

He was unluckly in having road signs on both sides. He most likely was worried about a veh coming around the curve. My guess is that probably will be his last flight flying low over trees. An engine out has a way of correcting those types of flying. Cathy's reaction was right on the money.

He gained altitude to clear the mountain which was fortunate for his "engine out" that followed. Stupid luck, I guess, and not to have a powerline across the road. Plenty of green fields off to his right but he burned up some altitude with those turns. Not the "best" place (location and altitude) to have a problem. Cathy will undoubtedly be more selective in her PIC -- if she ever flies again....

To PIC's credit, he made some really good last time decisions because this could have ended very bad for him and the passenger. I think he plunked the plane down to avoid possibly hitting an on coming vehicle or wires.

Cathy seems to be in shock at what happened. On the youtube comment section I beleive it said Cathy did fly again not sure if with this pilot :)

Riz: Nah. There was no oncoming traffic. He just pushed the stick to get down quick because road had curving sections and he wanted to land on the straight section naturally but then he was probably overtaken by nerves and did not time the flare properly and hit hard, jumped back up and came back down with the feet twisted (rudder applied). A fairly common thing for a PIC to stretch out his legs in a pinch and tighten up. Natural body reaction. However, that took him off the stright path and into the bushes. This is how trikes flip over as well sideways and damage the wing significantly because of the same reaction of the human body (stretch and tighten up legs ... usually legs don't stretch and tighten equally). This puts very high side bending loads on front forks on front landing gear or forks, breaking them or bending them hard. No machine is designed to take these loads.

He did good though starting from a very bad situation he put himself in with a 2-stroke engine (those engines in general but not always, run well while they run and then they quit, there isn;t much of a warning period) low over dense trees with a passenger. He also landed off center, which I don't know why.

    The lesson I see:

Do not land on a road with a passenger if you are unaware of the hazards. He clips a road sign on the right after landing. Knowledge of standard lane and shoulder widths (publicly available information) combined with a landing on the centerline (the pilot lands in the right lane) may have prevented this incident. In an off field landing it is prudent to check the landing area for obstacles before setting down unless it is an emergency.

hey, give the guy credit! the sign he hit said "right turn", so he did! (also, the bird circling him was trying to get his attention, screeching "hey twerp, theres a funny noise coming from your rear end"!)

Monty, could the bird have mistaken the aircraft for an Ass Blaster?

He barely made it over powerlines at 1:34

I think he did fairly well all considered. Flying low over terrain like that was his mistake. I think it takes at least one engine out landing (where things go good for you) to make you a better pilot... or at least more attentive to pilot decision making. We all like watching these videos for entertainment and to learn from. However we should not condone low level flight videos for entertainment OR educational purposes on this list. There are many on this list where things have gone great for the pilot. I just don't want to see them go bad. I have seen enough!

this vid is eerily similar to the one taken by 'soon to be dead' aviators in a 'spam-can' low over trees climbing a mountain-side and finally running out of luck, fatally. the look that cathy gave the 'pilot' was priceless! i too, have done, stupidness, but not with another humanoid relying on my judgement and decisions . yes, they did survive, barely. 'landing' in treetops then falling 60 ft ain't a 'sure-thing', either. if he was trying to impress (or scare) his passenger with his prowess at buzzing treetops, ok, i was impressed! so she may have been too. but that 'look' she gave

cont/.him, spoke volumes . fortunately, no fatals due to this crash, due more to 'luck' than judgement (and bruce, that 'ass blaster' of which you spoke was probably involved , somehow!)

They came out from this quite safe thanks God!
Flying low over forest (water, houses, etc.) is a Russian rulett.
He forgot they were three on board. Mr.Murphy allways there....we should calculate him!
I suggest engine out landing (in a safe place) once a week or month for all.

Did we ever learn what caused the engine out?
