by John Williams 9 months agoTrained with Kemmeries Aviation, Arizona, and with Wayne Bezzner-Kerr in Ithica, NY. Wayne now lives in Canada. Didn't get to Mosserwirt when visiting St. Anton. Love Lech! Motorcycled there, spent a week before moving on. Didn't know how to fly trikes then, but would do so now if I go back. Reading back on other posts; my wife, Maxine, just completed ground school for her private pilot's license. She is about three times your age less a couple years. I fly both a trike and a Cirrus SR-22. Can't say for sure which is more fun. As Abid said, knock out the written; get any flying in that you can, be it fixed wing or trike. Block out two weeks, go to an instructor who can get the job done and get your ticket. When you look back, it will be well worth the effort. I am the only trike pilot in our area. I fly my trike down to Florida, up to New York, out to western Pennsylvania and all over Virginia. I've flown across the Chesapeake Bay numerous times. Long Island would be a great place to fly a trike. I've flown up there in the Cirrus a couple times on Angel Flights. Plus we vacationed on Block Island. There is a trike instructor in Lynchburg, VA, you might give Terri a call. Precisionwindsports.com Warm regards, JDW

by John Williams 9 months agoLearned to fly trikes in Arizona & New York. Would love to fly a trike in Austria @ St. Anton. Did some hiking there, from St. Anton over the mountain top to Lech Vom Alburg. Quite different views in Austria than here in Williamsburg, Virginia. Come on down here to fly with us in the Colonial Captial. Regards, JDW jdwlaw@gmail.com

by Abid Farooqui 10 months agoHi Dorothy,
I am not sure if you'd be the only one in your area or not but I'd bet if you were the only one, sooner rather than later someone else will join you. Its the classic Chiken and Egg problem. I wouldn't let that stop me. Do you have people flying Cubs there. Trikes can fly right about the same speed. You don't have to have "triker's per say" to fly with. -
by Michael Kocot 10 months agoI can not agree with Steve more, Make YOUR dream come thue and others will follow. I've had the pleasure for the past year and a half of training with Gator in North Carolina. It's about a two and a half hour trip for me to his field. (some times more with beach traffic) I had made the trip many times at 4:00 AM and sometimes for nothing because of bad weather, only to have to drive back. This past winter I aced my written and I'm getting ready to take my practical so I can share by taking others up. in the beginning all my friends here in Myrtle Beach wanted me to buy a Harley and do the poker runs with them but, I wanted to fly.
Looking at me now they all are saying "that's so cool" and wanting to try it too.
Along the way I met some great people and that's the part I'll remember best. Dorothy, Look up Jackie Renolds...a great female pilot, trike pilot & hang glider pilot whom I met thru my CFI. She's a great person and can give you some tips from the female perspective. -
by Steve Sprague CFI 10 months agoDorothy,
I will never forget several years ago when I launched in my balloon and then looked behind me at the 15 or so other balloons launching behind me ... and then ... realizing that 12 of them had gotten into ballooning because of me! I had taught those folks how to fly and now I was watching them and their families get all that fun out of a whole new way of life and recreation.
Now, I have the same realization as I see the 11 or so students I am now teaching as well as the ones I have already taught and / or got involved in Trikes! Every time we have a few of us in the air at the same time, I have this uncontrollable smile on my face. =]
So, what's my point?
Be the ONE to START something! They WILL follow ... and you will have the personal satisfaction of not only having others to fly with, but the privilege of knowing you made it happen!
Trikes are exploding ... be a front runner and not a follower. Create something where there was nothing. you have no idea what you are missing!
We are all here to help in any way that we can. I'm sure Abid agrees 100%.
Women pilots are awesome aviators and compose a group of some of the best students I have ever had! =)
Just GO FOR IT!

by Dorothy Schwartz 10 months agoHi Abid,
Getting training in Florida is definitely an option, but looking out in the long term, will I be the only trike pilot in East Moriches? I would feel alot more comfortable flying with a group of people, like your group in ZHills. If If I've been flying my own trike for 10 years, that would be a different story. I'm getting more depressed as I think this through.

by Abid Farooqui 10 months agoDorothy, There aren't many if any places to train near you. You commented somewhere that you folks live in New Port Richey. We are at Zephyrhills Muni. We train a lot of people who are from out of state, who come down for 2 weeks and get their Sports Pilot's license. If you come prepared (get the written test out of the way), it is possible to get the license done. If you need to contact us visit our website at http://www.tampabayaerosport.com
We are a rather busy trike school and trike manufacturer in the US
