    Two Aeros Nano Trikes (ANT) are going to be delivered me in to Albuquerque around mid-February. These are soaring trikes. One is powered by the small Coarse-Air 26hp two stroke and the other is ELECTRIC. If you would like to see then and watch me fly them, plan a trip over here. The ANT-E with be the first of it's kind in the US. Frank

    Great. I am still waiting for Black Bull version. Want to see if the powerplant is behaving well. This trike may do well in U.S . The price and quality is very competitive. Thanx for your response.

    I have a love for nano trikes as they were what started the trike craze in the first place for all the right reasons . This might be good place for a rant .

    It is likely that the black bull version will have
    vibration issues as a trike frame /mount is not able to absorb the rotational vibes as well as a para-motor frame that it was designed for . But I could be wrong
    Even the my25 (black devil)needs soft mounts.
    I have 2 of them . 1 spare ..just in case
    keeping the weight down means increased vibes especially from a single cylinder.
    Just my experience so far ...
    The my25 24 hp is ideal for a light trike and the fuel economy I find to be hard to comprehend .
    3 liters( less than 1 gallon) per hour seems impossible but that is what I often get . I am always astonished at my fuel burn.
    With a nano trike it is more instinctive to seek lift and your safe out landing options are 10 times that of a chunky trike .
    I weigh 90 kg's my trike weighs 30 and I have 3 different wings that are also good hang gliders .
    climb rate is the almost the same with ds vs ss wings but the ss wings are more fun low down .ds wings for long scenic cruises 50 mph is max .
    The 24 hp will get you of the ground quicker that an 80 hp 912 ..
    I have a bigger trike that only gets used occasionally because most of the time I just want some air time and the nano does it well with no fuss ..a replacement hew wing (second hand hang glider ) is about 500 bucks . Which makes them very crash worthy .
    Fun for dollar solo , nano trikes rule !
    Keeping the weight down makes these machines more in touch with the air than a heavy trike .Its like riding a trail bike compared to a street cruiser.
    In a big trike you would often have a flight plan of sorts ..in a nano trike you just have a plan for flight .
    I'm not sure that makes my point but ultralights go better if they are ultralight .?
    As my roots are hang gliding so I suppose I am biased in favor of simplicity . On a bad day a nano will be on the ground earlier than a bigger trike so good weather is your friend .

    Any way I encourage anybody who has not considered a nano have a look at these and remember that are a fraction of the price of most trikes here and more fun and lower speeds, potentially make them safer . It sure feels safer knowing you can cram it into some bushes and likely walk home.

    I don't know what it would be like to have only flown a fast trike then fly a nano ? anyone?

    That picture looks like a water cooled polini thor if Im not mistaken.
    Nanos need simplicity and e start and water cooling are in my opinion not in keeping with their theme .
    Nanos are more suited to pack up and take home (no trailer needed) and less suited to hangar sharing.

    Lindsay, would you consider the Air Criation Racer a Nano? Not much weight, 35 hp Rotax 447 and a 14M wing. I haven't flown it yet because the wing looks old, sun faded a bit but all new hardware and cables. Can you recommend a new wing for the Racer as I would really like to take it out. I fly a Pegasus Q2 912 now. Regards, Andy

    Good question but no, it is like the halfway point .A Nano is really a motorized hang glider .
    The smoothness of a 447 has a lot of merit .

    I guess it is like motorcycles, where if the bike weighs less than you, you have control that is unavailable if it is the other way round.

    Sails that look faded need a bit of scrutiny but faded color does not always mean dangerous sail but be careful.
    Look at the betts test and test it yourself with a cheap ebay digital luggage scale.
    This is one thing that hang gliders had right ..pack them up an put them away .
    I have a ww harrier copy (impuls) from the late eighties that is still pristine and flys beautifully .
    They got it right back then but did not know it at the time.

    If the Black Bull turns out to be a "vibration problem," the Polini Thor 250 would probably be the best option, if you need more than 27hp. The Polini Thor 250 is very smooth, but the radiator adds extra complexity because of the hoses, nuts & bolts, etc.

    The newest or late model UL wings for nano trikes from Airborne, NorthWing, Aeros, Rev and others are much more and offer a higher level of safety than using a Hang Glider wing with extra sleeving as a UL trike wing. A quick look at these new wings will show their excellent airframe construction and a flight will demonstrate the easy and light handling. The new UL trike wings are purpose built and are quite different from a hang glider or LSA 2 seat wing.

    I look forward to an air cooled simple version of the polini 250.
    Larry, I would like to hear your nano trike perspective as from a non hang gliding background.
    Air borne have designed their trikes in such away the pilot sits forward enough so that the wings can be used as hang gliders and advertise them so. (avoiding the need to change the a frame position)
    Most all hanglider wings can be nano trikes as long as care is taken with the keel that was not designed for a solid coupling . Usually additional sleeving is required.Some of us like to have lose yaw coupling and in x wind,there is no limit to it .I prefer a bit of yaw as it shows some other issues like p factor rather well.
    I am working on a coupling that uses the original hang strap and ground loads are taken in a foam block .
    It's never a comfortable place to do experiments.
    prop clearance is another more obvious issue ,but most modern hang gliders have detachable rear keel sections.

    Not everybody should modify a hang glider wing unless they understand well what they are changing and why ..but there is lots of good info..nanolight trikers yahoo group is on excellent resource .
    My latest nano and many others are well documented there .
    I have found that things like e start and instrument panels/electrical systems are usually troublesome and un necessary on nanos . Think lawnmower garden chair umbrella ...
    Cht is a must especially first during run in period .
    My instruments are all battery powered ebay digital temperature gauges and a thing called a tiny tach which records hours and rpm. None are mission critical.
    Fuel guage is a small mirror to the translucent fuel tank.. everything simple and visible

    Also the ability to put them in the trunk means a longer, tedious set up .
    Mine goes on the roof rack.wheels folded, mast folded, with the glider.
    or on the tow ball with just mast folded on a bicycle type rack.
    They are so light ,the options are endless.
    a 2 wheel version is about to be born (with small skids instead of rear wheels )

    The standard engine on the REV is a Simonini Mini 3. it is an excellent example of the simplest engine available. But things like liquid cooling, gear box, centrifugal clutch, electric start, counterbalanced crank shaft and dual ignition all make for a better flying experience in my opinion.

    Hang glider wings quite frankly scare me... I know maybe its not justified, but I have a mind set of what makes me feel safe when I look at a structure and the hang glider wings do not give me that satisfaction.

    I believe the better you can isolate the yaw on any trike, the better.

    I have flown some nano light trikes that were super flimsy. I didn't enjoy a second of the flight. I'm just thrilled with the ANT and others that put quality into their trike carriage. The REV is not a NANO like the ANT, it is more of a single seat trike with little soaring capability. More similar to a single seat REVOLT than a soaring trike, One day we would like to add a nano light to our product line. I really liked the NW Solarus, if nothing else as a concept of what i'd like our nano light to look like. Now that NW discontinued it, maybe I'll buy the molds and do an infused Carbon Fiber version of some sort... And Electric! I would love an electric soaring trike. that would be worth owning.

    I flew hang gliders at the H4 level before I got into trikes in 2000. I flew the ANT a couple of years ago at Sun-N-Fun and was a little bit intimidated, wondering if I was going feel like I was flying hang glider or a trike. Alexanders' wife (owner of Aeros) flew it first. This is a middle aged woman that likes to sew and you would never guess she holds a world record in distance flying a trike and directs trike field tests at Aeros. After she flew it, I hopped in. I was impressed. It felt like a trike but soared like a hang glider. I flew the Thor 250 single spark with Combat wing.

    Yes nano trikes are a blast to fly and totally different experience from the big heavy trikes. My understanding is the term "nano trikes" was first coined in Australia which matched one of their trike categories with the least regulation. I am sure Lindsay can comment more knowledgeably about this category. I believe the max total weight for their category is 70kg (155 lbs). The UK recently began a 70kg max category as well. In the USA we have no such category, instead we have our part 103 that states max weight cannot exceed 254 lbs (115kg).

    It is extremely difficult to design and engineer a trike that meets the 70kg limit that is structurally strong enough for strong thermal conditions for the average pilot weight. For this reason most would use a HG wing that is appropriately reinforced since this would still be lighter than the "purpose built" UL wings that Gregg was referring to. Please note that using the strict nano definition of 70kg even the Aeros Ant trike fails to meet that weight. If I read their specs correctly, the stripped down trike with the Cors-Air M25Y is 48.5kg (107 lbs). The lightest wing they offer is the Fox T (king posted 16.2M single surface) that is 26kg (or 57 lbs). Total there would be 74.5kg (164.5 lbs). All other wings offered: Discus 15T or 14T, Fox TL13, or Combat 12T are 33, or 35, or 39 kgs. Even so, they have done a great job of keeping the total weight very low.

    Having said the above, I think most trike and HG pilots outside the UK and Australia may use the term nano with a bit looser definition on weight. Personally, I would probably call any trike with a total weight of say 200 lbs or less a nano. With a looser definition then certainly all the Ant trikes may fit into the nano category, with perhaps the exception being one outfitted with the Polini 250 and Combat 12T. In the USA, ALL Ant trikes would easily meet our part 103 category.

    I wanted to add some comments regarding engine options. Having flown single cylinder trikes for many years and following UL engine options very closely, I have developed some biases on engine choices. Yes, I have flown the Black Devil M25Y and I don't particularly like it primarily due to the vibration and heat dissipation issues I encountered. But these issues apply to most single cylinder 2-strokes. Yes, one can always use soft rubber engine mounts (silent blocks) and this helps but it does not eliminate the noticeable vibration and these silent blocks don't last long. I could go into a personal story where 2 (of the 4) silent blocks on my Simonini Mini 2+ engine broke in flight, but I will save that for another day. Please note that Cors-Air does offer a cylinder shroud that helps considerably with cooling on the M25Y engine. Oh, I have flown the Simonini Mini 3 and that engine vibrates even more.

    OK, now I think Polini has done a much better job delivering technical innovations that help on a number of fronts that Larry mentioned. The counter balanced crankshaft, liquid cooling, gear box, centrifugal clutch are great additions. My favorite are the first two. I do not yet own a 250 but what I hear from owners is it is very smooth. This is pretty amazing for a jug of almost 250cc. Ironically when I first got into flying an UL trike, I did not pay much attention to the effects of vibration. I now have a real appreciation for any light 1 cylinder 2-stroke that runs smoothly. All Polini Thor engines have this counter balanced technology.

    Currently I think the Polini 250 may be only water cooled 1 cylinder 2-stroke available for UL trikes. In my mind that is a huge benefit. I don't look at is as adding complexity (although I guess it is) but in elegantly tackling the critical task of not only dissipating heat but in maintaining cylinder and head temps in a more uniform range. Single cylinder 2-strokes with displacements close to 250cc generate a heck of a lot of heat especially when operated at or near WOT for a while or when used in hotter climates. Water cooling beats free air cooling or even fan force cooling hands down. I may eventually get a Polini 250 for a future trike build but I would never have interest in a free air or fan-forced cooled version and I seriously doubt they will release such a version.

    I would love to own an Ant but before I would consider getting one, I would have to get rid of my Maverick and it may be some time before that happens since I have slowly upgraded, enhanced, and perfected it and it is a real dream to fly. A test flight on the electric version of the Ant could be risky for me because I might have to have one which means I would need to get rid of the Maverick.

    I went for low weight not for compliance but for handling, and hanglider compatibility .
    lots of second hand wings go for peanuts here .
    Take off is at full noise but at 100 ft or so I back off to cruise climb and keep cht well below 200 deg c .
    As i get higher the oat goes down and more climb power is available . I have had the black devil to 9,000 ft still giving 150 fpm.
    The moment my vario shows solid climb I slow up and ride the bubbles, Thermals happen even out to sea
    My mounts are the softest and have webbing backups .
    I never considered that the latest trikes were not Nanos but i will say that the lighter the trike the more vibration dampening issues .
    My 2 wheel version (not flown yet)has a little more mass around the engine and am considering a 2 stage frame .. perhaps a counter balanced air cooled will be about soon.

    I do use the factory cooling shroud and its not hard to make the whole trike it under 35kg's.
    s/steel fittings, hand cart plastic wheels and bits of old hang glider or trike wings makes a good job of it . Cost is mostly the engine and prop. My normal operating environment is a deserted beach.
    The whole trike gets hosed down at the end of the day (no plugged tubes). So you will see my need for no complexity or electrics.
