Here I am at 16100 ft over 14131 ft Capitol Peak in Colorado. It was a calm morning. I took off from the 7800 grass airstrip at Marble and climbed and climbed and climbed. Continuous O2 is required above 14000 ft, and I had it on this flight. ...

The title of the talk is "The NM Backcountry in an Ultralight", which was shortened from "Exploring New Mexico's Backcountry in an Ultralight Trike". It will feature lots of GoPro Video, including some of my Fusion 360 video on the big screen, plus a lot of still photos and stories about exploring the New Mexico Backcountry from my trike. If you are Oshkosh this year, I hope you can come. I am created the video for another talk on Monday at 8:30am called "Flying New Mexico's Backcountry." They are both good, but my talk is trikes, trike, trikes. Be sure to say hi to me if you come to either talk. Jeff

jeff trike Larry, that wing likes to climb. Yes, I did it with the 80 hp rotax. Haven't been that high since in my hangglider in the 92. And I recorded it in 360VR !

jeff trike Flew my aerotrike cobra/rival-x from belen (e80) to paonia (7v2) with my flying buddy paul in his aeros2/profile tl. Non-stop. 407 miles, 6hrs 44 min. Nice flight, except the monster thermals in the last 2 hrs. Tomorrow, we head for the grass strip at Marble, Colorado.

jeff trike We are staying on the ground today. 20 mph winds in the peaks. Jet stream will shift north and give us calm conditions at 14000 starting tomorrow. We had strong thermals yesterday, 1200 fpm up sustained, 800 fpm down. One of the reasons we kept going was it was just going to get stronger. Thermals not a problem foe landing. I had 1.5 of gas on the ground. My fuel flow said 2.5, my float gauge was bouncing between 0 and 3, my sight gauge was sloshing between 1 and 3 at the end. I think 6:44 will be my personal record for a while.

Editing the GoPro Fusion video takes me about 10 times longer than normal video, but in another way it is easier. The camera is pointing in all directions, so it never misses the shot. I just have to find it. And the most boring flyby looks ...

Well that’s the way I always thought the 360 cameras should be used(specific shots instead of 360). However either the quality or the price has always been the issue. Looks like GoPro is getting there. Might add some still shots also.

    Rizwan,
My Aerotrike Cobra originally had a Rotax 503 on it. I flew it without any problems for 275hrs. I wanted something with more power, and a less frequent overhaul schedule. I initially looked into putting an HKS on it, but was dissuaded by several experienced trike pilots who said I would waste a lot of time and money in rigging an engine mount for it.

Aerotrike offered a 912 kit that made the task much simpler. It included a new engine mount, exhaust system, throttle and choke cables and splitters, plumbing, carbheat kit, and lots of mounting brackets.

I bought the engine separately. Bought a DVD on how to install a Rotax 912 engine and spent 4 months working on it in my garage. It was a tough job.

One advantage of putting the 912 on is that I know that trike and engine inside and out, and since I plan to keep flying if for a long time, I can do a better job at maintaining it.

If you look on my webpage, www.jeffsflightlog.com and go to the year 2006 and pull up the flightlog "2009/09/25 Supertrike" to read more of the details.

Jeff, you said that you installed a 912 on your trike by yourself. Was it a 582 trike before? My friend Tom flies an Aerotrike cobra that has a 582 in it. I learned to fly on it..Awesome trike. But my question was did you convert a 582 trike to 912? How did you do it? Did you have custom made mounts? If you could educate me a bit, I would be very thankful to you.
