There are many BMW engined trikes here in France. Most have the
later oilhead engines, 1100 and 1150 which go from 85 to 99 hp. The
hex head engine, 1200 is also fitted to some but is de tuned to 100
hp. I think the main problem is getting a gearbox for them. The
1200s are all twin spark and the 1100/1150 can be either single or
twin spark. They are all fuel injected. If you go to
http://www.powertrike.de/Motoren/BMW/index.html you will see a twin
spark 1150 fitted to a trike, this is 95 hp, but the R1100S engine
is 99 hp. Google "take-off" and you will find a German company who
makes gearboxes.

Hi Tom,
I am also planning to put a BMW R1200 on an Aeros 2 trike.
I have the engine already and bought the german Take-Off
gearbox/cluch for it.
The Take-Off gearbox looks good and reliable and has a good
reputation here in Europe. Expensive though.
I will use the BMW stock engine control.
The gearbox is a little different for r1200 and R1x00.
I am thinking about how to keep the exhaust/intake pipes/voulumes
similar to bikes.
That is difficult. Changed exhaust/intake will give less air to
the engine => less power and higer fuel consumption. The BMW
R1xx0 have _very_ good fuel economy.
The R1200 has higher compression/knock sensors/should run on
premium fuel/is lighter/ has balance shaft/ vibrates less. But
R11x0 is also very good engines.
The dual igniton on R1200 and late R1150 is not really what we
think of with dual ignition. It is mainly used at low power to
get clean exhaust gases.
At high power only one spark plug is really used because the
timing of the other is so much advanced that I suspect it cant
be used for saftey.
I plan to make a custom made display with engine data extracted
from the engine controller via the CAN-bus.
Mel, if you have some detailed high-res images of your BMW
installation, that would be very interesting to see:)
